First — what is a treatise?

A treatise isn’t an article or a quick overview. It’s the full, careful laying-out of a single subject — the whole thing, start to finish, meant to stand as the definitive account. An essay gives you a glimpse; a treatise gives you everything, in order, and leaves nothing out.

So A Treatise on the Twenty-Eight is just that: the complete account of the 28, gathered in one place — years of work, set down in the exact order the 28 builds itself, from a single point to the finished instrument. A complete, step-by-step construction blueprint.

So what is the 28?

Think of the great treatises. Euclid’s Elements took all of geometry and grew it from almost nothing — a point, a line, a circle — a whole world unfolding from a handful of simple beginnings. The 28 starts in that same place, with those same pieces. But instead of building outward into geometry, it folds them into something small and sharp: a key.

So what is that key, really? It’s a decoder — a small, fixed pattern, made of the most basic geometry, that you turn against a thing to reveal how it’s put together.

The closest everyday cousin is a seed — and it helps to think about how a seed actually works. An acorn doesn’t describe an oak tree; it contains one. The whole tree — trunk, branches, the shape of every leaf — is already written into the acorn’s DNA before it’s ever put in the ground. Nothing new is added as it grows. Planting it simply unfolds what was coded in from the very start.

The 28 works the same way. A whole structure is already written into it — folded up, complete, waiting — and the Key is how you unfold it. The pieces themselves are plain: a line, a circle, a fold, the solids they raise. Number is only one of the things they do; their fitting, their folding, their proportion, the way they come apart and gather back whole are others.

But here’s what makes the 28 more than a beautiful idea — it’s an operational tool, something you actually pick up and use. You take what’s folded inside it and lay it over something else in the world, to understand how that thing is made and to uncover what it’s holding. Not to describe it from a distance — to open it up and find what was always in there. At heart, it’s an instrument of finding.

What it does.

Point it at almost anything built from parts and it goes to work. Turn it on a knot, and it reads out the crossings the knot is made of. Turn it on a solid, and it shows the folds that raised it. Turn it on a number, and it shows how the number is assembled and what it holds. Every time, the same move: take the thing apart, see how the pieces fit, bring out what was hidden.

Here’s the part that catches people off guard: it isn’t only for mathematics. It was made to be applied widely — to physics and the sciences, to the very small and the very large, to engineering and the shape of space, and right down to the plain workings of ordinary, everyday things. The rule is simple: wherever a whole comes apart and fits back together — wherever parts fold, turn, hold a proportion, or return on themselves — you can set the Key against it and turn. To the Key, a knot in a rope and a twist in space are the same kind of puzzle; a fold in a sheet of paper and a fold in a growing crystal are the same move. Mathematics is simply where it’s easiest to show, cleanly and to the last decimal — the twenty-eight is where the tool is shown; it is not the edge of what it can be turned upon.

And why twenty-eight?

Because it’s the smallest, cleanest key of its kind — the first place the whole thing shows itself at once. It even carries its own signature: add up its parts — 1, 2, 4, 7, 14 — and they rebuild 28 exactly. A pattern that comes apart and puts itself right back together.

That’s the 28: a few of the oldest, simplest pieces of geometry, folded into the smallest complete key — an instrument of finding, made to be turned on the world.
